Covid-19 Webinar: Impact of the crisis on small farmers
Saturday, May 16th, 2020 in: News
The Rethinking Value Chains Network hosts a series of webinars on “Covid-19: impact of the crisis on small farmers and workers of agricultural, electronics and textile value chains.”
The Rethinking Value Chains Network hosted three webinars on this theme: in English, French and
Spanish. In each case a diverse range of speakers from agricultural, extractive, and industrial
workers’ unions, NGO and fair trade representatives gave accounts of the short-term impacts of the
crisis that were already being seen on the ground and discussed potential long-term consequences.
Some of the ideas that came out of the webinar series:
- The crisis is also an opportunity, as it has increased citizen consciousness of how vulnerable
supply chains, they role that workers and small farmers (they are part of the solution) and
the need to rethink how we produce and consume. - We need to be careful that recovery plans are not hijacked by companies that are itching to
make money again and that we are not lulled back into older patterns of consumption. It is
essential to promote a proliferation of social enterprises, cooperatives and other mission-led
business models as part of the recovery.
